Green

Join us in the movement toward green computing.

Digital devices, including laptops, computers, and phones, are increasingly necessary for our day to day lives. But as technology improves and new gadgets come out more frequently, most digital devices are thrown away after only a couple years of use, leading to our current global e-waste crisis.
There’s a more sustainable way to get the technology we need: refurbished electronics. Joy Systems is proud to be part of the “green computing” circular economy that lowers the environmental impact of electronic devices.
Electronic waste

What’s the Problem with E-Waste?

The world’s fastest-growing waste stream today is electronic waste, which the United Nations defines as any discarded product with a battery or plug. Every year, as much as 50 million tons of electronic and electrical waste are produced, with less than 20% of it formally recycled. At our current rate, global e-waste production is projected to reach 120 million tons a year by 2050.

Electronic devices contribute significantly to environmental pollution from the very beginning of their production process, when core minerals like cobalt, gold, silver, and silicon are mined in ways that contribute significantly to air and water pollution.

When discarded, toxic chemicals from e-waste in landfills around the world seep into the soil and groundwater, negatively impacting food supply systems and water sources. Chemicals like lead, mercury, beryllium, thallium, cadmium and arsenic, which are all components of digital devices, lead to irreversible health effects like cancers, miscarriages, and neurological damage. Millions of children and women in particular are at risk of suffering the health effects of these toxins.

How Joy Systems Helps

Each shipment of used computers and laptops to our warehouse in New Jersey is one less shipment to a landfill. Joy Systems breaks the cycle of e-waste by extending the life of electronics. Instead of being prematurely discarded, our electronics are restored and reused in ways that create sustainable jobs, lower the bar to access quality technology, and slow the buildup of e-waste in landfills.

When used computers and laptops arrive, each one is carefully cleaned, repaired, and restored to like-new quality by our trained technicians. We then pack and ship computers to schools, offices, warehouses, and homes across the country and world.

As Microsoft’s largest authorized refurbisher and winner of multiple awards, we are leading the industry in a movement toward green computing.

Our Action

All of the boxes used in our packaging are made from recycled materials that support eco-friendly environment.

4000
Save kilo-watt of electricity per every ton
17
Save trees per every ton
7000
Save gallons of water per every ton

We acknowledge our role in helping take care of the environment.

As citizens of our planet, we recognize our duty to conduct business in an environmentally responsible manner. Not only does our business model itself help keep 650,000 tons of e-waste out of landfills, but the way we’ve sourced our packaging contributes to this as well. All of the boxes used in our packaging are made from recycled materials, saving 17 trees, 4,000 kW of electricity, and 7,000 gallons of water per every ton of recycled cardboard.
